A rich heritage in the heart OF The Lothians

History of Harburn Estate

Harburn House was built in 1804 for Alexander Young (1757-1842), factor to the Duke of Hamilton, to replace Hayfield House, which lay further to the north. Although the Ordnance Gazetteer (1882) notes the existence of ‘Harburn Castle’, said to have been fortified during Cromwell’s invasions, nothing survives.

Harburn House is a square, two-storey, attic and basement Georgian house of five bays and two full height bows to the rear with two separate independent cottages.

The House sits on the higher ground of the land overlooking the stunning Bents Burn which flows south-west to north-east across the park, and feeds the lakes. As you walk through the grounds you will appreciate the work of our own specialist team who carefully look after and nurture our grounds and we enjoy seeing the results of the work they put in so much that we also have a landscaping and grounds maintenance business.

The main entrance is to the north of the estate, the drive enters from a side road off the B7008.

For the last 40 years the Estate has been, and continues to be, where the Spurway family grow and farm Christmas Trees
